10,000 Steps (and a Bit of Pickleball) Once Again!

I last wrote about walking and my personal goal to walk (or run or move or play pickleball) a minimum of 10,000 steps each day.  In that post, I reported that I had walked 10,000 or more steps every day in November.  I did the same thing in December, up to and including New Year’s Eve. For perspective, walking 10,000 steps per day is roughly the equivalent of walking 5 miles per day.

After walking to dinner early on New Year’s Eve, my wife and I had just walked back into our (gated) neighborhood. As we attempted to cross the street, a nice lady drove quickly through the gate and made a sharp left where we were crossing the street.  She nearly hit us. My wife got out of the way and I thought I had, but alas, the nice lady was so close to the curb that, while she missed my body and leg, she ran over my right foot. We were both thrown to the ground in the process of all this.

Her shoulder was injured, along with a knee and a hip. I also hit the ground pretty hard. But the worst thing was that the weight of that danged car on my foot broke one bone in my right foot. That’s the bad news.

The good news is that we are going on three months since that night. After wearing a nasty-big boot on my foot for two months, the bone is healed and the foot is getting back to normal. I actually played pickleball a couple of times (only a couple of games each time) while at our place in Port Orange, Florida (Daytona Beach) this past week. I didn’t run back for any lobs, and I missed a number of short returns that I normally would have reached.  But I played pickleball and did a bit of fun exercising for the first time since the accident. shutterstock_215102059

Today, I played a bit of pickleball, took a walk, and was generally active. After dinner, my Fitbit Versa let me know that I had crossed the 10,000 step daily goal for the first time since the accident on December 31st.

I’m still in recovery mode for the foot, and so may not reach 10,000 steps every day in the coming days and weeks, but I feel like I’m beginning to get back on track. I was amazingly happy to reach 10,000 steps today and decided to let readers of this blog know about it.

Perhaps I’ll write a post about my newest athletic passion, pickleball, when I get back on the courts on a regular basis. Pickleball, they say (whoever they are), is the fastest growing sport in America. Take 100 seconds for a quick look at pickleball.

Until next time, be well!

Chris

  1. Hey Chris,
I started playing Pickleball six (6) months ago…
Now I understand how (who?) it’s the fastest growing sport in the U.S.!

I am hooked and it’s my weekly dose (if not daily dose) of exercise…
I’ve lost 25 pounds since I started playing. I used to be a tennis player…

Now I need to play…. or else!
